Dear DCO community,
A long time has passed since the last official status update from our side and we are truly sorry that you had to wait such a long time.
We do understand the frustration of some of you, especially since everyones hopes were high during and directly after the OBT last summer.
Now -exactly one year after the OBT- we must admit that we as staff team got a little bit carried away by the hype and greatly underestimated how much work was still necessary for a release.
For this reason, we would like to give you a detailed status update of the things that have been worked on over the last months and an outlook on the future of this project.
What has been worked on since the OBT?
Although we already ran multiple Open Alpha Tests in the past, the OBT was the first real stress test for our server since the start of development. In the first days, up to 50 players were playing consecutively at the same time and it was foreseeable that some unknown, potentially game breaking bugs would surface.
We received a lot of bug reports from you -our community- and additionally we found a lot of potentially game breaking issues simply by reviewing the logs.
In the past year, we have fixed most of these game breaking bugs that we discovered during the OBT, including issues with players logging out but not being kicked out of the party, which also lead to issues in HUV partys, or Battle Zone rooms with slots filled by players that had already logged off or multiple players on the same slot.
Besides bugs, we also added multiple administrative features that we considered crucial for GMs to timely react to repeated rule violations and ban evasion in order to protect the game and the community once DCO is released.
After the most important bugs. issues and administrative features were tackled, we continued working on Battle Zone. We started with PVP rewards, which were still not implemented during the OBT but we considered important to have. At the same time, this also gave us the chance to fix some smaller issues with Channel Battle.
What will come next?
Since we have started working on Battle Zone again, our next and most important goal is to get Channel Battle up and running before the release. It is already implemented to a large extent but still needs some tuning. Additionally, there are a few smaller issues that we still want to fix before the release.
Meanwhile, there are still many fixes that have not been verified yet and need testing. We have to admit that in hindsight, it would have probably been smarter not to limit the scope to such a small group of testers but we did not really have the time during the past year to actively recruit new testers.
We have discussed this with the team and have decided to accept new testers during the still ongoing Closed Beta testing period. We will release an application form for new testers shortly.
While we approach the release, the CBT will continue with additional testers. During this period, we plan to verify the fixes and changes we made since the OBT and then run an additional Channel Battle test once it is fully ready.
When will the server be open to the public?
The staff team is in agreement that we do not want to drag testing out any longer than absolutely necessary. As soon as the fixes resulting from the OBT have been tested and Channel Battle is fully implemented and verified, we will begin discussing a potential release date.
Upon release, Channel Battle will however still be disabled. We are planning to enable it when we are confident that the server is running smoothly and people had enough time to adapt to DCO's system, which partially differs from other versions such as DCR or official versions like GCDC/ Skid Rush.
After that, we plan to introduce other features of the game (GT Championship, Neo City, etc.) with periodic updates.
Disclaimer regarding a potential release
DCO is based on an emulator that was written from scratch. This approach comes with a high customizability and allowed us -among other things- to implement our own parts and car system. Though, it also comes with the downside that even with extensive testing and changes to stabilize the server, there might still be smaller bugs in our code.
Please understand that we do not have the time and resources to fix all reported bugs in a timely manner. We will focus on potentially game breaking bugs or bugs that have a significant negative impact on the gaming experience. Smaller bugs will be fixed whenever there is enough time, but not at the expense of delaying the addition of new game modes.
Thank you very much for your patience and support. We are excited to continue this journey with you and will keep you updated!
~ DCO Team
